More and more students are beginning to complain that they are not interested in school or learning because they often find themselves lost in everyday routines and seem too bored with the same approach to teaching that they have seen over and over. I think we can all remember that one teacher that did the same things day after day, year after year. How boring was that? Do you feel like you learned anything at all? Students today are living in an active and engaging society. Everything around us seems to be constantly changing, except for our teaching abilities. Many students have a negative perception of the classroom and learning. According to a study done by John Hattie in 2009, "students find themselves living in a personal and social world of their own in the classroom; they already know at least 40% of what the teachers intended them to learn." The reality is students do not learn the way the way we taught 50 years ago, or even 5 years ago. Society today encourages us to use technology, so why not use it in our instruction in the classroom? Although everything seems to be changing, very little has been done when it comes to teaching. Teachers are always the first to be blamed, perhaps because they are exhausted because they have tried numerous programs that are ineffective? This daunting task can easily burn out teachers and leave them frustrated and wondering what went wrong. It is our job as educators to become evolving learners and to never stop exploring all options until we find one we believe will work for students. The world we live in today is forcing us to change everything we have grown accustomed to both in and outside the classroom is different than it was before. Our teaching approaches and the way we approach student learning must change in order for our students to be successful in our world today. Of course this is easier said than done, there still are many puzzling questions we as teachers must face. Perhaps one of the most significant questions in regards to teaching approaches is what can we do to make our instruction interesting for students of the 21st century?

I believe as an educator of the 21st century it should be our number one priority to prepare students for whatever the future holds. Although we are uncertain of what type of new technology will be available to them, it is important that we incorporate what we know now to be “up-to-date” and “cutting edge” into our classroom instruction. This video below highlights why learning is changing for students today and why this can be challenging for veteran teachers. It also highlights the importance of why technology must be used in education in order for the next generation to succeed.
